Germany introduces border controls

Starting September 16, 2024, Germany will introduce temporary border controls at all land borders for a period of 6 months.

In addition to the temporary internal border controls already in place at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, the German Interior Ministry informed the European Commission on 9 September that it is introducing similar controls at the borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.

In addition to illegal migration, such security measures are intended to combat Islamist terrorism and serious cross-border crime.

The checks mean that crossing the German border will take longer and there may be queues. This should be taken into account when planning your travel.
