Changing tourist visa policy

Canada is changing its policy on tourist visas, which were previously standard practice for up to 10 years. Under the new rules, immigration officers will have more discretion over the type of visa and its duration, meaning frequent visitors may not always be granted long-term visas.

The immigration service IRCC said officers will consider each applicant individually, and the length of the visa will depend on the purpose of the visit, financial resources, the applicant’s health, ties to their home country, etc.

For multiple-entry tourist visas, officers will also set the validity period, which can be shorter than the maximum 10 years.

The changes are part of Canada’s new approach to temporary immigration, driven by a housing shortage and rising cost of living.

The new rules could make it more difficult for frequent visitors to travel, as they may have to reapply for new visas more often.
