Changes to Alberta’s provincial nomination programs were announced on August 7. The Alberta Opportunity Stream is moving to the Expression of Interest system, which has been used in other provinces for many years.
Starting September 30, anyone who meets the program’s requirements will be able to create an application in a common pool, indicating their details, on the basis of which points will be awarded. The government will conduct selections and send out invitations to apply, although the frequency of these selections is not yet known.
Previously, the process was very stressful due to overloaded servers - applicants were given priority not by objective criteria, but by internet speed, the number of assistants or bots to refresh the page, and luck. The changes will make the process more fair, as everyone will have an equal chance.
The program is temporarily closed until September 30 for the implementation of updates. The new system will be less favorable for candidates with lower scores, but overall it is more predictable and fair. We hope that starting next year the number of nominations will increase and the submission process will become less stressful.
